What is SmartChef?

SmartChef is a Progressive Web App (PWA). This means it's a website that can be installed on your device and used just like a regular app from the App Store or Google Play.

You don't need to visit the App Store or Google Play to download it. Instead, you install it directly from your web browser. Once installed, SmartChef appears on your home screen, opens in its own window, and works just like any other app.

No App Store Required

SmartChef installs directly from your browser. This means you always get the latest version automatically, without waiting for app store updates.

Why Install SmartChef as an App?

While you can use SmartChef in your web browser, installing it as an app provides several important benefits:

Push Notifications

Receive reminders for temperature checks, deliveries, and cleaning tasks even when SmartChef isn't open. This is the main reason to install the app.

Quick Access

Launch SmartChef instantly from your home screen or taskbar. No need to open a browser and type in the address.

Full-Screen Experience

SmartChef opens in its own window without browser toolbars or address bars, giving you more space to work.

Better Bluetooth Support

When installed, SmartChef has more reliable access to Bluetooth for connecting your ETI thermometer probe.

Faster Loading

Installed apps load faster because they store resources locally on your device, reducing data usage too.

Works Like a Native App

SmartChef appears in your app switcher, can be pinned to your taskbar, and behaves like any other app on your device.

Important: Push notifications only work when SmartChef is installed as an app. If you want to receive reminders, you must install it using the instructions below.

iPhone & iPad

You must use Safari to install SmartChef on iPhone and iPad. It won't work from Chrome, Firefox, or other browsers on iOS.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open Safari and go to app.smartchef.ie

    Make sure you're using Safari, not Chrome or another browser.

  2. Tap the Share button

    This is the square icon with an arrow pointing up, located at the bottom of the screen (iPhone) or top of the screen (iPad).

  3. Scroll down and tap "Add to Home Screen"

    You may need to scroll down in the share menu to find this option.

  4. Tap "Add" in the top right corner

    You can change the name if you like, but "SmartChef" works well.

  5. Find SmartChef on your home screen

    The SmartChef icon will now appear on your home screen. Tap it to open the app.

For push notifications to work on iPhone/iPad, you need iOS 16.4 or later. Go to Settings > General > About to check your iOS version.

Android Phones & Tablets

We recommend using Chrome for the best experience on Android devices.

Option 1: Using the Install Banner (Easiest)

  1. Open Chrome and go to app.smartchef.ie
  2. Look for the install banner

    A banner should appear at the bottom of the screen saying "Add SmartChef to Home screen".

  3. Tap "Install"

    SmartChef will be added to your home screen and app drawer.

Option 2: Using the Chrome Menu

If you don't see the install banner, use this method:

  1. Open Chrome and go to app.smartchef.ie
  2. Tap the three dots menu

    This is in the top right corner of Chrome.

  3. Tap "Install app" or "Add to Home screen"

    The wording may vary depending on your Chrome version.

  4. Tap "Install" to confirm

    SmartChef will be installed and appear on your home screen.

After installing, you can find SmartChef in your app drawer alongside your other apps. You can also add it to your home screen from there.

Samsung Devices

On Samsung phones, you can also use Samsung Internet browser:

  1. Open Samsung Internet and go to app.smartchef.ie
  2. Tap the menu icon (three lines) at the bottom right
  3. Tap "Add page to" then "Home screen"
  4. Tap "Add" to confirm

Windows Computers

You can install SmartChef using either Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

Using Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and go to app.smartchef.ie
  2. Look for the install icon in the address bar

    It looks like a computer monitor with a download arrow, on the right side of the address bar.

  3. Click the icon and select "Install"
  4. SmartChef will open in its own window

    It will also be added to your Start menu.

Using Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge and go to app.smartchef.ie
  2. Look for the install icon in the address bar

    Or click the three dots menu and select "Apps" > "Install SmartChef".

  3. Click "Install"
  4. SmartChef will open as a standalone app

    You can pin it to your taskbar for quick access.

Pin to Taskbar

After installing, right-click the SmartChef icon in your taskbar and select "Pin to taskbar" for one-click access.

Enabling Notifications on Windows

After installing, make sure Windows notifications are enabled:

  1. Open Settings (Windows key + I)
  2. Go to System > Notifications
  3. Make sure Notifications is turned on
  4. Scroll down and find Chrome or Edge
  5. Make sure notifications are enabled for your browser

Mac Computers

You can install SmartChef using Chrome, Edge, or Safari (macOS Sonoma or later).

Using Google Chrome (Recommended)

  1. Open Chrome and go to app.smartchef.ie
  2. Look for the install icon in the address bar

    It's on the right side, looks like a monitor with an arrow.

  3. Click the icon and select "Install"
  4. SmartChef will open in its own window

    It will also be added to your Applications folder and Launchpad.

Using Safari (macOS Sonoma 14.0+)

  1. Open Safari and go to app.smartchef.ie
  2. Click "File" in the menu bar
  3. Click "Add to Dock"
  4. SmartChef will appear in your Dock

    Click it to open SmartChef in its own window.

If you don't see "Add to Dock" in Safari, you may need to update to macOS Sonoma (14.0) or later. Alternatively, use Chrome which works on all macOS versions.

Enabling Notifications on Mac

After installing, check your notification settings:

  1. Open System Settings (click Apple menu > System Settings)
  2. Click Notifications in the sidebar
  3. Find SmartChef in the list of apps
  4. Make sure Allow Notifications is turned on
  5. Choose your preferred alert style (Banners or Alerts)

Troubleshooting

This usually happens because you're using the wrong browser. On iPhone and iPad, you must use Safari to add apps to your home screen.

  1. Close Chrome, Firefox, or whatever browser you're using
  2. Open the Safari app (the blue compass icon)
  3. Type app.smartchef.ie in the address bar
  4. Tap the Share button and you should now see "Add to Home Screen"

The install banner may not appear if:

  • SmartChef is already installed - Check your app drawer
  • You're in incognito mode - Use a regular Chrome window
  • You've dismissed the banner before - Use the menu method instead

To install using the menu:

  1. Tap the three dots in Chrome
  2. Tap "Install app" or "Add to Home screen"

If the install icon isn't visible in the address bar:

  • Check you're on the right page - Make sure you're at app.smartchef.ie, not the marketing site
  • Try the menu instead - In Chrome, click the three dots menu, then "Save and share" > "Install SmartChef"
  • Use Edge - Microsoft Edge often shows the install option more prominently
  • Clear your cache - Sometimes a cached version prevents the install prompt

On some devices, newly installed apps don't automatically appear on the home screen:

  • Android: Check your app drawer (swipe up from the home screen). You can drag SmartChef from there to your home screen.
  • iPhone/iPad: Look on your last home screen page or in the App Library. You can drag it to your preferred location.
  • Windows: Search for "SmartChef" in the Start menu. Right-click to pin it to Start or the taskbar.
  • Mac: Check your Applications folder or Launchpad. You can drag it to the Dock.

If you need to reinstall or remove SmartChef:

  • iPhone/iPad: Long-press the SmartChef icon, then tap "Remove App" > "Delete App"
  • Android: Long-press the icon and drag to "Uninstall", or go to Settings > Apps > SmartChef > Uninstall
  • Windows (Chrome): Open chrome://apps, right-click SmartChef, and select "Remove from Chrome"
  • Windows (Edge): Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find SmartChef, and uninstall
  • Mac: Open Finder > Applications, find SmartChef, and drag it to Trash
